The result of the decades of research work on pain management by the psychologist and psychotherapist Alessandro Failo, It still hurts me is a volume designed to help parents assess and manage their children’s pain.

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The book is divided into 4 chapters:

  1. What is pain and how does it work provides the basics on pain and its characteristics;
  2. The main conditions of pain describes, with many examples, where the most common pains come from (primary headaches, musculoskeletal and joint disorders, functional gastrointestinal disorders, dysmenorrhea) and pains related to specific diseases and their treatments;
  3. Evaluating, measuring, identifying deals with myths and prejudices tied to pain in children and adolescents, the key points for evaluation and the importance of observation and communication;
  4. Beginning to treat pain focuses on what family, school and friends can do, withtips and practical examplesthat illustrate preventive behaviors, helpful relaxation practices, and advice to improve understanding and communication of symptoms.

The text contains numerous images and explanatory graphs and Did you know that? boxes with information or brief insights on important issues. Furthermore, at the end of each chapter the key points to highlight the fundamental concepts are highlighted.

In the appendices you can find 12 practical worksheets: a concrete tool available to parents and adolescent children, to be used together or independently, to monitor episodes, improvements and mental attitude with which pain is addressed.

THE AUTHOR

Alessandro Failo is a psychologist-psychotherapist, PhD, health educator and teacher for the University of Ferrara and for the University of Verona. He mainly deals with therapy and training in childhood in the clinical, rehabilitative and educational fields.
