Playing to grow: Goats and cabbages

The Playing to grow series: Goats and cabbages

Gather your flock with speed and a sharp eye

Goats and Cabbages is a fun game designed to train executive functions in children aged 5 and above and adults alike, particularly memory and attention skills. Playing is simple: whether you’re a herder or a farmer, figure out the correct sequence and be the first to reach 8 points—the minimum number of goats needed to form a small flock.

HOW TO PLAY?

The goal of the game is to collect five different cards and arrange them in a sequence according to the rule determined by the dice roll.

Dice can result into 4 possible rules

  1. Each player draws six cards from their deck.
  2. The youngest player rolls the dice. The result will determine which rule from the list must be followed to form the initial sequence.
  3. At the start signal, all players simultaneously draw a card from their deck, trying to create the required sequence.
  4. The first player to complete a valid sequence declares it, shows it, and – if the sequence is correct – he/she chooses an opponent’s Role Card whose role he/she has to guess to earn points and win.
  5. The first player to reach eight points — the minimum number of goats needed to form a small herd — wins the game!
