Social Stories with AAC



The series

Social stories are texts that clearly and concisely describe a situation, skill, outcome, or concept, with the goal of helping people better understand the situations and events they encounter in their daily lives. Each story provides information on what is happening and why, suggesting the correct behaviors to implement.

The texts in the Social Stories with AAC series are written using the symbols of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) with the aim of supporting the linguistic, communicative and social understanding of children (not only those with complex communication needs) through the use of graphic symbols. From personal autonomy to the management of emotions, from interactions with others to creative expression, social stories describe the big and small adventures of everyday life.

These stories can be integrated into various contexts: at home, at school, with family members or with other children. Furthermore, they are also useful tools in rehabilitation centers because they help promote communication and social integration for anyone who needs it.

The stories written with the AAC symbols are accompanied by colorful illustrations. Here is an example from the volume Let’s learn to brush our teeth with Giulia:

The book collects 40 short social stories written with the symbols of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) which briefly explain what is happening, why it happens and what attitudes to adopt in specific situations. The book describes routines, behaviours, skills and emotions identified as among the most frequent in children aged 3- 4 years and up

The stories are divided into 3 main areas: personal care and hygiene, behavior, emotions.

All it takes is strawberry toothpaste, a yellow toothbrush, and a song to make her want to brush them again.

Luca, mom is coming back is a social story written in Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) symbols which use lively illustrations and words represented with graphic symbols to tell about how to deal with separation from a parent. The book deals with this topic through the engaging story of Luca, a child who becomes so sad every time he goes to school and gets separated from his mother. But thanks to his classmates and teacher, he finds his smile again.

THE AUTHORS

Elisa Cancellieri, Graduate in Speech Therapy, she is a speaker at training courses and university seminars. She has worked for over 15 years at the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry service of the Romagna Local Health Authority, dedicating herself to the evaluation and treatment of primary and secondary disorders of language, communication and autism.

Agnese Raspa, Graduate in Educational Sciences and Speech Therapy, she teaches training courses and university seminars. She has been working for more than 10 years at the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Service of the Romagna Local Health Authority, dedicating herself to the evaluation and treatment of primary and secondary disorders of language, communication and autism.
